McCain Masala The Movie
The frozen fries category in Canada was stuck. Consumers had been burned by inauthentic international flavours and were skeptical of food innovation. In addition, the rapidly-growing South Asian community, who knew real flavour, was being largely ignored by the frozen food aisle. McCain faced a crucial question: how do you reignite genuine interest in a category where people were giving up on trying? UM worked with McCain to flip the playbook. Instead of advertising a product, they premiered a cultural event. McCain produced an authentic masala cinema film, launching their new Masala Fries product like a major theatrical release. The next bold move: McCain didn't interrupt content—they became part of it. Prime Video, IMDb, and strategic contextual targeting on Amazon's Best of India, Zefr's platforms, and community channels placed McCain inside the cultural moments South Asian Canadians were already consuming. Sales exploded vs. the previous innovation launch, driving a remarkable 20% increase in category volume. The South Asian Buyer Index reached 290—triple the category average. Brand awareness doubled benchmarks, word-of-mouth surged, and consideration grew significantly. McCain proved that true authenticity can drive category-defining growth.
